Koshiki Jima Field Work

Jane, Rick, and I helped Jon out with his field work in Koshiki Island just west of Kushikino in Kagoshima. We ate lots of fish....or marine animals.... including Japanese anchovies, barnacles, LIVE abalone, fried mackerel, etc. etc. Jane and Rick seemed to like our Japanese home-style meal, such as the Ebifurai (Fried Shrimp in Panko), Japanse style fried chicken, Japanese pork shishikabab, and Japanese syle Hamburger meat with sauce.
ジョンの仕事のお手伝いをしました。フジツボを産まれて初めて食べたけど、案外おいしかったよ。

Hot Spring

Mom, Haru, and I took Jane, Rick, Nat, Jon, and Courtney for a road trip to Imari (the ceramic town) and to natural Hot Spring Spa in Kurokawa (the Black River) Onsen. It is very common for the Japanese people to take a dip in the natural volcanic spa during our vacation. This Kurokawa Onsen is famous for it's serenity and the scenic village in the mountains. We stayed at Yamamizuki. The food was amazing. We woke up to a earth trembling earthquake! But everyone seemed pretty relaxed after a dip in the hot spring. Enjoy the photos!
黒川温泉にジョンの家族を 連れて行きました。まずは遠回りだけど伊万里の太一郎窯へ。そして山水木でお風呂を浴びた後はおいしいご飯。山菜などおいしい日本の春をいただきました。 朝は福岡が震源の地震で目が覚めましたが、みんな温泉でリラックスしてたからか、地面が揺れるのは心地よいくらいだったみたいです。ジョンの家族はみんな 地震は初めてだったのに。。。朝はまたもや体によさそうなご飯。黒川の温泉で炊いたという大粒な納豆（これはあとからあっちゃんのおば様に聞いた情報）を 外人のみんなもペロリ。あんなに納豆嫌いだったジョンもおいしいとたいらげた。やっぱり質がよければ納豆嫌いでも食べれるのか。。。

SoftBanks Hawks

Baseball is probably the most popular sports in Japan after Sumo... Our home-team in Fukuoka is the SoftBanks Hawks!! (used to be called the Daiei Hawks). The Hawks is a relatively new team and used to be one of the weakest teams. Just like the Boston Red Sox fans, us Hakatakko (people who live in Fukuoka) are very passionate about our team. It is so much fun to cheer for the underdog.... But in recent years, the Hawks have won the World Series in Japan twice in a row!! Anyway, for somereason, Japanese fans have many creative ways to cheer for their team. We often have a song for each player and we chant them when they are in the batter box. The Hawks fans also like to blow up balloons at the seventh inning. Also whenever the Hawks wins the game, the team shoots some fireworks in the air WITHIN the Dome! Check out the photos!
ダ イエー。。。おっと、いけない、ソフトバンクスホークスの応援に友達と一緒にジョンの家族を連れて行きました。お決まりでKFCとチューハイを食べまし た。いやはやホークスは強いし応援は楽しいし。野球の発祥地から来たアメリカ人もダイエーファンの応援にびっくりしてました。全然試合見てないで、外野の 応援団ばかりに目がいってたのでホームラン何本かでたけど、気づいてなかった。。。写真みてね。

Nikke Reunion

When I was in high school, I entered an english essay contest sponsored by Nikke and Asahi News Paper. 10 of us from all over Japan were chosen to go to Perth, Australia as youth embassadors. We home-stayed with Australian families, went on a road trip to the dessert, met with the mayor etc. etc. It has been about 15 years since that trip to Ausralia!!! Most of them live in Tokyo and I was fortunate to meet up with three of them! 高校の時、朝日新聞とニッケ主催の英語エッセーコンテストの賞として一緒にオーストラリア留学した友達と１５年ぶりに再会しました。みんな素敵になってい てびっくり！写真を見てね。

Hamilton Reunion

Eiko planned a great Hamilton Reunion for us in Tokyo. I was surprised to see so many of my friends (non-Japanese friends) lived in Japan!! It was so nice to see such familiar faces! ハミルトン大学時代のお友達の同窓会がありました。Christine やRaviまで日本にいるなんて！TimともAmyとも会えて嬉しかったわ。みんな変わってない。。。英子ちゃん、幹事ありがとうございました。おかげで いい思い出ができたよ！

The Bahamas

I went to the Bahamas (Lee Stocking Island) for 1 week as a Teaching Fellow for the Invertebrate Zoology course taught at Harvard University. The water was amazingly blue and we enjoyed snorkelling and scuba diving! This was my first time scuba diving in the ocean, and it was just wonderful. We were blessed with a small group of such wonderful students and we had so much fun!!! Here are some photos.ハー バード大学で今春開かれていた無脊椎動物学のクラスの一貫として、バハマ諸島に１週間生徒達を引率しました。このために、スキューバダイビングの資格もと りましたが、”このまま海の下にいたい”、という衝動にかられるくらい美しい体験でした。グランブルーの主人公の気持ちがちょっと理解できたような。。。 今まで見たことないくらい青い珊瑚礁。毎日珊瑚珊瑚であきるくらいでした。巨大伊勢エビや生きた化石であるストロマトライトという３billion yearsもの前地球におきた初の生物形の大群も見られました。写真を見てね。
